Morning Meditation

Back in the days when I was a Meeting Service Concierge at Mohegan, there were times when things were so hectic, and I felt like a spinning top. To escape the chaos, I would sneak away to the spa. I’d ditch my name badge, take off my uniform jacket, and just chill out. I’d close my eyes and listen to the soothing music that greeted guests in the lobby. It was like hitting the pause button on life. Taking a moment for yourself to relax and recharge is so important for enjoying both your life and your job.

Happy Earth Day 2024

Here are some ways Americans can reduce their plastic use:

Hey guys! Sorry for the long post today, but I really think our planet and our bodies need all the attention we can give them. As a teacher, that’s how I approached Earth Day with my students – I wanted to show them that taking care of our planet is like taking care of ourselves. You know, we’ve got all this evidence now that the plastic we use is ending up in our bodies and our food. And guess what? That stuff never goes away… unless we do something about it. I’m sure you’re in agreement, we want to leave a better planet for our kids, right? So, let’s all make an effort to reduce our plastic usage and take care of our planet. Deal?

1. Choosing reusable shopping bags over plastic ones is a simple yet impactful step towards reducing plastic pollution and promoting sustainable living. Plastic bags, designed for single use, often end up in landfills, oceans, and waterways, harming wildlife, polluting ecosystems, and contributing to climate change.

Reusable shopping bags offer numerous benefits. They are typically made from durable materials like cotton, canvas, or nylon, which can withstand repeated use and last for years. By opting for reusable bags, you can significantly reduce the number of plastic bags you consume, thereby reducing plastic waste and its associated environmental impacts.

One of the key advantages of reusable shopping bags is their versatility. They can be used for various purposes beyond grocery shopping, such as carrying books, clothes, or other items. Some reusable bags are designed with compartments, making them ideal for organizing and separating items.

Moreover, reusable shopping bags are often more visually appealing than plastic bags. They come in a wide range of colors, patterns, and designs, allowing you to express your personal style while making a positive contribution to the environment.

Using reusable shopping bags not only benefits the environment but also saves you money in the long run. Plastic bags often require a fee at checkout, while reusable bags can be used repeatedly, eliminating the need to purchase new bags every time you go shopping.

To make the switch to reusable shopping bags seamless, it’s a good idea to keep a few bags in your car, purse, or backpack so they are always at hand when you need them. You can also consider purchasing foldable reusable bags that are compact and easy to carry around.

By choosing reusable shopping bags over plastic ones, you can contribute to a more sustainable future, reduce plastic pollution, and make a positive impact on the environment. Every small action makes a difference, and your commitment to using reusable bags can inspire others to do the same.

2. Carrying a reusable water bottle instead of bottled water is a simple yet impactful way to reduce plastic waste and promote environmental sustainability. By making this small change, you can contribute to reducing the 60 million metric tons of plastic produced each year, a significant portion of which ends up in landfills, waterways, and oceans.

Here are some of the benefits of carrying a reusable water bottle:

  1. Environmental Impact:
    • Reduces plastic waste by eliminating the need for single-use plastic water bottles.
    • Helps conserve natural resources as plastic production requires a lot of energy and water.
  2. Health Benefits:
    • Avoids the potential health risks associated with BPA (bisphenol A), a chemical used in the lining of some plastic bottles.
    • Some reusable water bottles are made from non-toxic materials, ensuring the safety of your drinking water.
  3. Cost Savings:
    • Buying a single reusable water bottle can save you money in the long run compared to buying multiple plastic bottles.
    • Many public places now have free water fountains, allowing you to refill your bottle for free.
  4. Convenience:
    • Reusable water bottles are portable and can be easily carried with you wherever you go.
    • Some bottles come with features like filters or insulation, making them ideal for outdoor activities or long commutes.
  5. Personalization:
    • Reusable water bottles can be customized with different designs, colors, and patterns, adding a personal touch to your hydration routine.

To make the switch to a reusable water bottle even easier, here are some tips:

  1. Choose a durable and leak-proof bottle that can withstand daily use.
  2. Keep your bottle clean by washing it regularly with warm water and a mild detergent.
  3. Bring your bottle with you when you travel or go out to reduce the temptation of buying plastic water bottles.
  4. Encourage friends, family, and colleagues to adopt this sustainable habit as well.

By carrying a reusable water bottle, you can make a positive impact on the environment, your health, and your wallet. It’s a small change with big benefits, and every little bit counts in the fight against plastic pollution.

3. Opt for Bulk Foods: Purchase dry goods like grains, nuts, and beans from bulk bins to avoid pre-packaged items wrapped in plastic. Bring your own reusable containers to store these items at home.

  1. Shop Local: Support local farmers’ markets, grocery stores, and zero-waste shops that prioritize sustainable packaging. You’ll find fresh produce and other goods often sold without excessive packaging.
  2. Look for Recyclable or Compostable Packaging: When plastic packaging is unavoidable, choose products with recyclable symbols or compostable materials. Recycle or compost these packages properly to minimize waste.
  3. Choose Glass Over Plastic: Opt for glass jars, bottles, and containers over their plastic counterparts. Glass is a more sustainable and reusable material, and it’s often used for packaging food and beverages.
  4. Reuse and Repurpose: Before discarding packaging, consider reusing or repurposing it in creative ways. Plastic containers can be used for storage or organizing, while cardboard boxes can be used for crafting or as seedling trays.
  5. Join Refilling Stations: Participate in refill programs offered by various stores and cafes. Bring your own containers to refill household products like cleaning solutions, detergents, and personal care items, reducing the need for single-use plastic bottles.
  6. Advocate for Change: Reach out to manufacturers and retailers to express your preference for products with minimal or no plastic packaging. Your voice can contribute to driving positive change in the industry.
  7. Support Sustainable Brands: Choose products from brands committed to reducing plastic waste. Look for certifications like “Plastic Neutral” or “Zero Waste” to identify companies taking tangible steps towards sustainability.

4. Bring your own containers for takeout or leftovers instead of using disposable containers.

Taking your own containers for takeout or leftovers is an excellent way to reduce waste and help the environment. Many restaurants are now happy to accommodate customers who bring their own containers, and some even offer a discount for doing so.

Here are some of the benefits of bringing your own containers:

  • Reduced waste: Disposable containers are a major source of waste. In the United States, we generate over 100 billion pieces of plastic cutlery, straws, and stirrers each year, and only a small fraction of these items are recycled. Bringing your own containers helps to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfills and incinerators.
  • Environmental protection: Disposable containers are often made from non-renewable resources, such as plastic and Styrofoam. These materials can take hundreds of years to decompose, and they can pollute our oceans and waterways. Bringing your own containers helps to reduce the demand for disposable containers and protect the environment.
  • Cost savings: Bringing your own containers can save you money in the long run. Many restaurants offer a discount for customers who bring their own containers, and you can also save money by avoiding the cost of buying disposable containers.

Here are some tips for bringing your own containers:

  • Choose the right containers: Choose containers that are made from durable materials, such as glass or stainless steel. Avoid using plastic containers, as they can leach harmful chemicals into your food.
  • Label your containers: Label your containers with your name and the date so that you can easily identify them.
  • Bring enough containers: Bring enough containers to hold all of your takeout or leftovers.
  • Be polite: Be polite to the restaurant staff when you bring your own containers. Explain that you are trying to reduce waste and ask if they mind if you use your own containers.

By bringing your own containers for takeout or leftovers, you can help to reduce waste, protect the environment, and save money.

5. Opting for products made from alternative materials instead of plastic is a smart and sustainable choice. Here are a few reasons why, and some ideas for what to look for:

  • Environmental Benefits: Plastic production and disposal contribute significantly to pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and ocean plastic waste. By choosing alternative materials, you can reduce your environmental impact.

  • Health: Some plastics can contain harmful chemicals like BPA, which have been linked to health issues. Opting for alternative materials can minimize your exposure to these compounds.
  • Design and Aesthetics: Many products made from alternative materials feature unique and stylish designs, allowing you to add a touch of elegance to your home or lifestyle.
  • Versatility: Alternative materials can be used to create a wide range of products, from kitchenware and storage containers to electronics and personal care items. You’ll find a variety of options to suit your needs.
  • Supporting Sustainable Brands: By choosing products made from alternative materials, you can support businesses committed to sustainability. This encourages the development of eco-friendly production methods and innovations.

Here are some specific product ideas made from alternative materials:

  • Glass Storage Containers: Replace plastic food storage containers with glass jars or containers. They’re durable, easy to clean, and free from harmful chemicals.

By making this simple switch to reusable alternatives for straws, utensils, and cups, we can take a significant step toward creating a more sustainable and plastic-free future.

7. Purchasing items in bulk is a great way to reduce packaging waste and make a positive impact on the environment. When you buy items in bulk, you are often purchasing a larger quantity of the item, which means less packaging is needed. This can help to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfills and oceans, where it can harm wildlife and pollute the environment.

Many items can be purchased in bulk, including food, cleaning supplies, and personal care items. When shopping for bulk items, it is important to consider the following factors:

  • The size of your household. If you have a large household, you may need to purchase more items in bulk to meet your needs.
  • The amount of storage space you have. If you have limited storage space, you may need to purchase smaller quantities of items in bulk.
  • The cost of the items. It is important to compare the cost of purchasing items in bulk with the cost of purchasing them in smaller quantities.

In addition to reducing packaging waste, purchasing items in bulk can also save you money. When you buy items in bulk, you often get a lower price per unit than you would if you purchased them in smaller quantities. This can help you save money on your grocery bill and other expenses.

Here are some tips for purchasing items in bulk:

  • Look for bulk bins at your local grocery store. Many grocery stores have bulk bins where you can purchase items such as grains, nuts, and dried fruit.
  • Shop at warehouse stores. Warehouse stores often sell items in bulk at a lower price than grocery stores.
  • Buy in bulk online. Many online retailers sell items in bulk.

By following these tips, you can purchase items in bulk and reduce your packaging waste. This is a simple way to make a positive impact on the environment and save money at the same time.

  4. Hygiene: Cloth towels and napkins can be laundered and sanitized after each use, ensuring better hygiene and minimizing the risk of cross-contamination, especially in public restrooms or kitchens.
  5. Aesthetics: Cloth towels and napkins add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your home or business. They come in various designs and patterns, allowing you to choose ones that match your personal style or decor.
  6. Versatility: Cloth towels and napkins can be used for multiple purposes. In addition to being used as hand towels or at mealtimes, they can also be repurposed as cleaning cloths, rags, or even as gift wrapping, reducing the need for additional disposable products.
  7. Support Sustainability: By choosing cloth towels and napkins, you are supporting sustainable practices and encouraging businesses to offer eco-friendly alternatives. Your actions can inspire others to adopt similar habits, creating a ripple effect that positively impacts the environment.

Bring In The Good Vibes!

Make Your Home Serene

Include all five senses while making a home, along with creating a safe haven for your evolving body and soul.

Your home is like your own private slice of heaven. With a little TLC, you can turn it into a chill spot where you can relax and be yourself. It can be your sanctuary, a place where you feel safe and comfortable. And when you have guests over, they’ll feel all cozy and welcome too.

A tidy and cozy home can make you, your family, and your pals feel chill and give you a break from the crazy world outside. Making a place like that isn’t hard. Even if you’ve got little kids or a zoo’s worth of pets, you can still have a peaceful home.

Listen! In no time, you can make a few easy changes that’ll transform your humble abode into a cozy and secure sanctuary. It’ll be a place you’ll be thrilled to show off to your pals and family.

Wanna make your home a relaxing oasis? Start with the vibes! Soft lighting and calming colors like blue, purple, and green can make a space feel cozy and inviting. And don’t forget the scents! Pleasant and calming aromas like lavender and vanilla can totally change your mood.

Calming sounds like the water flowing in a fountain or soft chimes can make a space feel better and more peaceful. Getting rid of clutter and using open space wisely can also help you feel better emotionally and get rid of negative thoughts.

The stuff in your house, like furniture and the house itself, can hold onto the vibes of the people who lived there before you. If you want to freshen things up, try picturing a bright white light all around your place. You can also sweep away bad energy using a sage bundle. . . my personal favorite!

What you do with your home can be as unique as you are. You can change the layout, add some new furniture, decorate, or even try feng shui or rituals. But the most important thing is to make your home a place that feels good to be in.

Make your home a cozy place, and it’ll feel like a warm hug every time you step inside!

Ride The Wave Of Life

Misquamicut Beach ~ Westerly, RI  Looking towards the Holiday House Mansion 2018

Ride the wave of life

Life’s a wild ride, but you gotta find a balance between going with the flow and standing your ground. You know, sometimes, life throws you curveballs. It’s like being on a crazy rollercoaster, with ups and downs and twists and turns. But instead of fighting it, try to embrace the ride. That’s when things get easier. Just let life carry you where it needs to, even if it’s not where you expected.

Riding the wave of life can be wild, but it’s also a natural and effortless journey. It’s not like you just sit back and let the wave take you wherever it wants. You gotta be on top of your game, staying focused, centered, and alert. But you also need to chill out and go with the flow. Don’t fight against the wave; let it carry you where it needs to go.

Life is a journey, it has its ups and downs. The ups are the moments of joy, success, and fulfillment, while the downs are the challenges, setbacks, and disappointments. Just as a wave cannot be stopped or controlled, life’s journey cannot be paused or manipulated. It’s a continuous movement, an ever-changing landscape that we must navigate as best we can.

When we try to resist or fight against the natural flow of life, that’s when things get tough. It’s like trying to swim against the current in a river—it’s exhausting, frustrating, and ultimately futile. Instead, we must learn to accept and embrace life’s waves, both the good and the bad. By doing so, we conserve our energy and maintain a sense of inner peace and resilience.

When life knocks us down, it’s natural to feel discouraged and overwhelmed. But just as a wave crashes on the shore only to retreat and gather strength for the next one, we too must pick ourselves up and keep moving forward. Dwelling on the past or worrying about the future is a waste of precious energy. Instead, we must focus on the present moment and take one step at a time.

Life’s journey is not a competition or a race. It’s a unique and personal experience that unfolds at its own pace. There is no need to compare ourselves to others or strive to meet unrealistic expectations. Our journey is our own, and we must embrace it with gratitude and open hearts.

So, let’s relax, enjoy the ride, and see where the wave takes us. Let’s trust in the process of life and surrender to the unknown. By doing so, we open ourselves up to the possibility of unexpected wonders and hidden treasures that life has to offer.

Surfing the wave of life is a sweet gig—you get to go with the course without burning yourself out. It’s like being carried by a wave, with your head popping out of the water, enjoying the ride. Trusting the universe can be tough, but it’s easier when you’re chilled and relaxed. So hop on that wave, and let it take you where you need to be!

Hit Pause . . .

At Times Hit Pause

When there’s a break in the action, folks wonder what they’re doing with their lives.

You know that feeling when you’ve just crushed it, and everything is going your way? It’s like you can’t be stopped. But then, out of nowhere, you hit a wall. You’re still trying to figure out what to do next, and you start to question everything. Well, that’s just the transition period, my friend. It’s a time to reflect on what you’ve accomplished and figure out what’s next.

So, you’re feeling a little stuck and unmotivated, huh? That’s normal. We all go through phases like this from time to time. We’re humans, after all, and we’re meant to be doing stuff. But here’s the thing: there’s nothing wrong with just chilling for a bit. Take a day, a week, or even a month to just BE. Don’t do anything, just relax and let your mind wander. Before you know it, you’ll be ready to jump back into the action.

When you’re in a lull with no clear next step, life can feel like a big, empty void. It’s easy to want to sprint straight to the next thing but when you’re not sure what that is, it’s like your brain hits a brick wall and you just feel frustrated and lost. It’s easy to start thinking you’re stuck in a rut. But here’s the thing, if you’re focused on growing as a person, you’re always making progress, even if you’re not actively working on a specific goal.

This break can be a real eye-opener, giving you time to reflect on what’s happened lately and decide what you want next. Just by hanging out and doing your thing- YOU DO YOU – you can reconnect with what matters most in an organic way.

The whole “mindful transitional pause” thing can look different for everyone. Some people use it to think about how their life has gone so far, while others use it to adjust to new values after a big change. Just because you’re not speeding towards a finish line doesn’t mean you’ve lost your mojo. The time between trips can be a chill zone that sets you up for whatever’s coming next.

“Be a lamp, or a lifeboat, or a ladder. Help someone’s soul heal. Walk out of your house like a shepherd.”

Transformation through Exploration

Most of us don’t just pop out of the womb knowing what we’re supposed to do with our lives. We gotta go out there and figure it out for ourselves.

Most creatures belong to a certain soul squad and are born with an innate sense of what they’re supposed to do in life. Animals go about their day, finding food, taking care of themselves and their babies, and making a home. No one has to tell them to do it, they just know. But for humans, it’s a different story. We don’t usually come out of the womb with a clear understanding of our purpose.

So, like, the whole point of life is to find your purpose, right? When you know what you’re here for, it’s like everything just clicks into place. But finding your purpose isn’t a piece of cake. you gotta put yourself out there, try new things, and let yourself grow. It’s a journey, not a destination.

Your purpose in life is unique, just like you are, and it can change as you grow and experience new things. You don’t need anyone’s approval to follow your dreams and find your purpose in life. No one else can tell you what your purpose is; it’s something you need to figure out for yourself. Finding and fulfilling your purpose can take a lifetime, but it’s worth the effort. To figure out what your purpose is, ask yourself what makes you tick. What makes you jump out of bed in the morning excited to start the day? What are you passionate about?

Think about activities that you’re into or a career that would make you fired up! These things can help you find your purpose and make you feel really good about yourself.

Imagine working on projects that don’t excite you or help you grow as a person, but they pay the bills. Picture yourself doing this day after day. How would that make you feel? Now, imagine spending your time on projects that get you excited, that make your heart race, and that you can’t wait to work on. These are probably things that you’re meant to be doing with your life.

You won’t regret spending time on things that are important to you. If you live your life with a purpose, you’ll feel like you’re making a difference and have control over your choices. Every action and intentional decision you make will have a purpose.

Peace ♥ Harmony, Cheryl

Plant the Seed . . .

Cultivate The Seed

We can find peace within us like a seed we can always turn to for comfort and tranquility.

In our loud and crazy world, we often wish for some peace and quiet. We think that we need to go somewhere special, like a religious site or a quiet building, to feel at peace. But what if I told you that you don’t have to wait until you get to one of those places? You can find peace right inside yourself! It’s like a little seed that you can grow into a big, strong plant that will always be there for you, no matter where you are.

Have you noticed how we sometimes get caught up in a frenzy of anxiety and forget to just chill? It’s like our minds are on a constant roller coaster ride, never finding a moment of calm.
