Home Decorating In The 1940s

1940 Retro Decorating Style

Overshadowed by World War II, home design in the early 1940s was quite creative. As the European designers and artists fled to the United States, bringing many new ideas, development of new designs remained at a stalemate until shortly after the war ended. This was primarily due to material shortages. As production picked back up, people were ready to start new lives, which included Redesigns of the homes, especially rooms that would accompany guests.

Fabrics
Floral patterns were popular for bedrooms, living areas and wallpapered bathrooms. For the kitchen and dining room we had cherry or apple motifs, gingham, or checks, with roosters and chickens. I am still loving the roosters!

Furniture
While primarily mix with the 1950s, it was the 1940s that introduced chrome dinette sets with Formica tabletops, as well as glass drawer pulls, and chrome and vinyl stools, into the home. Bentwood furniture – made by soaking or steaming wood and bending it into curved shapes and patterns – were coming into fashion.

Flooring
Linoleum – especially in bold geometric patterns – was top choice for the kitchen. The material was strong and lasted many years, despite the fact it required lots of regular maintenance to keep it clean and shiny.

New Technologies
The 1940s brought to market the wooden radios and phonograph consoles, as well as fabric covered televisions to add luxury to a room. Families would often sit together to hear or see shows with their fashionable TV Trays (my grandmother bragged that hers had wheels), and guests would be included for momentous events.

Colors
The decade was riding on the edge of two primary color palettes. Art Deco – included the ’20s through the early ’40s and reflected a shift to lighter and brighter, more neutral shades with metallic undertones. Pastels were a huge favorite for home interior decorators.

Overall Look
While the mid- to late-1940s introduced many new design concepts and materials, most households still kept it simple when it came to the overall look of a room. Primary focus was put on the family – open space was key. Even in modest homes, updates were often made to “enliven” the look in the home turning the focus from wartime; sad and dark rooms to peacetime; happy and colorful interiors. Clutter-free was key, even in family rooms, bathrooms, and bedrooms as everything had its place. Living a free and simply life with clarity and purpose . . . That’s the Life of The Successful!

Helping The Homeless

What a wonderful program in Nashville – We could use this kindness all over the country~

“Our homes are mirrors of ourselves. They reflect our importance, our character, or indecision, our spirit and our desires. Our homes tell a story about how we feel about ourselves and the world around us.”

Zion Lutheran Church Blackburn MO

Zion Lutheran Church – Blackburn Missouri

My grandfather was a Preacher at this church years ago, the day my Uncle and Aunt being tour guides of all the history that my brother and I had missed growing up without knowing this side of my family or our father – decided this was to be one of the stops. Great Choice . . .

The town is awesome – small town for sure, a population of 286 at the time we were there early 2000. We had gone to visit our dad at his grave site – he is buried at Higginsville Veteran cemetary – https://mvc.dps.mo.gov/cemeteries/higginsville.php a beautiful place. Afterwards, my Uncle brought us into town to have something for lunch, we were eating our lunch and talking – the waitress says “Are y’all good? cause there’s a parade coming soon“. I said a parade on a Wednesday afternoon, well my brother and I looked at each other like two seven-year olds and ran outside.

Sure enough, here comes the parade down the middle of Main Street – I was kinda of caught in the moment and thinking I was in the middle of a DOC HOLLYWOOD scene. I thought how freakin’ awesome is this to have a parade in the middle of a Wednesday afternoon!

By The Grace of God ~ Joey and I had said that morning at our hotel room “that it was too bad we never got to do anything fun with dad.” Well, later on that day I said to my brother “we have to change our story – because a parade on main street in the middle of the week was pretty freakin’ fun” We feel he had something to do with it . . . along with Ms. Bev (our mother)!

Sometimes Taking A Path of Unexpected Leads To A New Beginning

See the source imageEMPLOYMENT UPDATE:

I have accepted a position with the Thames River Community Service in Norwich, I will be working with the homeless community in our area. Do Not Fear – this is a part time position, so I will be continuing with my Home Concierge business. I am honored to be a part of this team, and for me to utilize my skill-set to make a difference in someone else’s life.

Here is just a short description of what this service offers to the homeless community.

Three years ago, Thames River Community Service, Inc. (TRCS) began prioritizing this program to serve young parents and their children. Since May 2017, TRCS has become a transitional housing program for families headed by youth between 18-24 years of age. They are mothers, fathers, or couples who have been in the foster care system themselves, have been victims of human trafficking, have been homeless or unstably housed, with little or no healthy support system. While at TRFP they work with our staff to develop life skills, including parenting, employment and tenancy. This enables many to leave TRFP for permanent housing within a year.

I am very excited to bring my ‘Tool Box’ of experience and skills that can help these young adults to provide a safe haven for themselves and their children.

Clean It Up! Being Productive in The Office Starts With Cleaning and Organization

Okay, you can’t hire a Terry Tate to bring up productivity in your office, but you can hire a Cleaning & Organizing Service to bring efficiency and purpose to each area of your business.

What’s your biggest obstacle to productivity at work? For some people it’s the constant dings of smart phone notifications and emails; for others it’s distracting interruptions from co-workers. But for a lot of employees, the one thing that stands in the way of efficiency is simply not being able quickly find what they need to complete a task.

Being disorganized costs you time and money, people can spend hours looking for things in their office and on their computer, that they could be spending on work that’s making money for the business. Here are 10 Productivity Tips you can use at your office:
