The First Step Clearly Defines What It Is You’re After

I had a moment of Clarity last week. It came when I was going through the clutter in my office that had accumulated in the past few days, trying to get ready for another work week of building relationships, scheduling my content for my blog, deciding what flyer to send to the printer, and the many other things solo business owners must get done.

My moment came when I realized that finishing my book has been front and center in my thoughts and dreams. So, I made the first step – after I organized a few weekly business content and information. I then made a home for all my “Book Stuff” – I put it out in the open (not hiding in the back of the closet) to access, to write notes, to start my research and interviews.

It was a small step – but a step none the less!

What’s your first step?

Whatever your first step is

Trust Me When I Say – Nobody Wants Your Sh$t (stuff!) Downsize Your Clutter Now

home downsize 2

“In today’s world of tiny houses, capsule wardrobes and consultant Marie Kondo, a lot of people have felt the urge to purge”. More and more of us are deciding to get rid of extra space, and extra stuff, and moving into something cozier and best efficient for our lives.

While several factors are important to us in choosing a home in our later years, which include items like having sidewalks, a nearby grocery store, and relatively short commutes to work, size is also a consideration. I don’t about you, but I don’t want to be taking care of a 2,000 square foot home in my wiser years  – when I’ll most likely have trouble keeping an eye on my shoes!

When you’re newlyweds, eager to start a family, and want extra space for friends and relatives to stay while visiting, a big home fit the bill. But, now your children have their own homes (I hope!) and this big house is now too costly for your life. If you’re an Empty-Nester, now is the time to downsize into a small place.

MANY BABY BOOMERS ARE willing to downsize their home in order to lower their retirement costs. Moving to a less expensive house can simplify your life, to get your expenses under control and help you live out your life in financial security along with Peace of Mind!

Here’s 7 Tips To Downsize & Declutter Your Home

  1. Get motivated. Sometimes you need a reason to downsize. Maybe your son or daughter is moving back home (for a short period of time) and you have to make room, or you’re putting the house on the market in order to move down south. Having a deadline is a powerful motivator to set things in motion. If you don’t have an official move date, then set your own deadline, such as a birthday, anniversary, or the end of the year.
  2. Stop trying to impress everyone. Many people think they have to have the best of everything. But by this point in our lives we should be beyond such trivial comparisons. It’s not what you have in your life that’s important, it’s who and what you have in your life that brings you joy!. The books that sit on your shelves don’t matter as much as the books you’ve actually read. If you really want to impress your friends, display love and interest in what matters to them – instead of showcasing a garage full of junk.
  3. Make a plan. Start making lists and schedules. Come up with a priority-order of things to get done, then delegate who is responsible for what tasks. Who will clean out the garage by what date? Choose the charities that will accept your donations – my favorite is to hold a tag sale to make some extra moola! Determine a strategy for disposing of your household’s old textbooks, magazines, sports equipment, and decide who is going to negotiate with them about what they’re going to take and what they’re going to allow you to dispose of.
  4. Save only what “brings you joy”. Take a positive plan-of-attack. Don’t look at it like you’re getting rid of everything that has no home. Instead, think in terms of saving what’s important and what you will actually use in your new life. If an item doesn’t bring you joy, then let it go to someone else that can appreciate it to its fullest. Your goal is a smaller but more valuable collection of belongings.
  5. Get more decisive. Make decisions about each item. Sometimes decluttering goes in stages. As you proceed through the process, recognize how much energy organizing and disposing of all your stuff takes out of you. You will begin to realize that what seemed like “I can’t live without this” two months ago now just seems like extra stuff. You’ll become more practical, develop a determination to keep your clutter under control. Then, you’ll start moving through your piles more quickly.
  6. Rent a storage unit . . . Not Long Term! Make no mistake, downsizing is a lot of work, and emotional issues may hold you up. If you just can’t find a way to scale down to the level you need, then rent a storage unit and put the overflow in there. Set a deadline for paying the fee; 3 months? A year? Go back and take another look before the deadline. You’ll have fresh eyes and clearer mind to make decisions to complete the job at that point.
  7. Enjoy the new You! The earlier you downsize the better, physically, socially and financially. It’s about giving up something today for something you truly want or need. The payoff is often a fresh start, lower living expenses, less house-related work, a different lifestyle with less stress and more freedom to travel or whatever is most important to you.

Going through a lifetime of possessions may require professional assistance. Not everyone is comfortable, for example, helping people go through family heirlooms. Figure out which pieces family members might want and which to sell, donate or keep. Consider archiving your children’s drawings and photographs digitally. Some opt for an estate sale, garage sale or yard sale, depending on what they have. Whatever you may need help with a Professional Organizer is skilled and educated to help with your declutter & downsize project.

Grounding Yourself with Meditation * Affirmations * Visualization

I use meditation to reduce my Anxiety and Panic attacks – The Mindful Movement is one that a friend turned me on to, I love her soothing voice!

I know I’m not the only one out here suffering from these attacks at certain times of life. The brain is a powerful instrument – when these attacks are happening to me I have created “Anchor Sayings” I use (some call affirmations), when the attack is happening it’s like my brain is driving at 100 miles and hour, but my body doesn’t know where it’s going. The sayings get me back into control of this vessel I call my body.

Anchor sayings I use are “Cheryl, you are okay“, “Cheryl, you are not dying“, “Cheryl, this will pass soon”. I personally, get up and move, does not matter what time of day it is – I do something. I clean, I organize an area, I dance slowly, I workout lightly (lift light weights) I don’t do a full workout! I  personally have to move – laying in bed do the deep breathing does not help me.

Another tool I use is visualization – I create a clear picture of how I want to feel. I love to be at the ocean so I will often picture myself walking on the beach with all the noises and smells of being there. This along with my anchor sayings will bring me out of the attack with minutes – I know when it’s happening it can feel like forever!

I hope you find these tools can help you live a more productive and happy life as they have helped me throughout the years. Enjoy the meditation this morning.

Peace & Harmony ~ Cheryl

Solitude In A Social World

introvert quote 2

The big buzzword of today in the life-coaching arena is “Accountability” – they suggest to tell the world what you’re “doing” by notifying friends and posting on social media to keep yourself accountable. I say bullshit, you tell the world what you’re doing and everyone wants to talk to you about it.

If you’re an Introvert like myself, you don’t want to tell the world what you’re up to. You want to be left alone to think, plan, and then you’ll be ready to talk. You select the ‘safe people’ to talk to about your goals and visions let them be your “confidant buddies”.

I’m an “outgoing introvert” which means, I make myself go out to meet people, try new adventures, and get out of my comfort zones. I love meeting new people, I love being around people, but I do not get my energy and creativity from people. I get that by spending time with myself creating ,expressing myself with Journal Writing, Vision Journals, Sewing, and Reading.

For years I have worried that people would think I was a little different – unique! I would have these self talks that would go something like this: “Cheryl, it’s okay that you didn’t want to go” or “it’s okay not to go, nobody want to be around someone not having a good time”. My mother was an extrovert, she never understood why I didn’t want to go with her on the weekends visiting all her friends (except for a few fun gals!). She never understood that it’s where she got her refuel, but I would sit there feeling empty.

“People empty me, I have to get away to refill”~C. Bukowski.

I’m a BTH (Back of the house) kind of person, I’m not looking for the spotlight. I like to facilitate – be that guiding person to make sure everyone has what they need to shine! I’m an approachable person, my husband says I’m like a magnet to certain people. Some people mistake that for me being this outgoing extrovert – when I’m really just being a nice, kind, and outgoing introvert.

We should start having conversations with people that we work and hang out with. The first question we should ask is, Where do you get your energy from, being around people or being with yourself?

Susan Cain  is my new hero, she truly knows what is going on inside of my introvert brain. Listening to her on a podcast a few years ago made me cry. It was the first time I felt like I finally was given a big “thumbs up” for being who I was, and that it’s okay to spend time with yourself recharging.

I think back to when I was a Preschool Teacher, I can think of five students I had that had these characteristics of an introvert. Those same students are now fourteen to sixteen years old, they’re at an age when the young tribe (teenagers) want to gather and plan what they will do for communication, engagement, and fun things away from their older tribal members (parents!). How wonderful would it be to communicate to parents and  future educators about what is observed when learning if a preschooler portrays the introvert or extrovert character traits? This information would be very informative when creating group activities, study groups, and other peer team-building programs.

Styling Your Airbnb Can Bring You The Money

Do you have a spare room or maybe a whole house that is just sitting there costing you money – when you could be making money?

Airbnb is the way to go . . . let’s be honest though, if you don’t have panoramic water view or an unbeatable location to offer guests – you are going to need to rely on the interior design of your property to get guest to book at your Airbnb. The more energy you put into thinking, planning and executing this design – the more plenty your Airbnb income will be.

You need to consider your location. If you’re furnishing an apartment in New York city it’s probably best to avoid rural, rustic, farmhouse theme when it comes to interior design – that theme could work well for a barn that has been converted into an Airbnb in the country. Your theme should make sense with your surroundings.

I set out to accumulate all the design (easy-to-implement) tips I could find to make it easy for you to add your own personality to a space.
