Motivation is Powerful

It predicts success better than intelligence, ability, or salary.

~ 4 Tips to Stay Motivated  ~

  1. Make a Date – Knowing where and when to start is half the battle to finding the motivation to organize.  The next part is actually ‘doing it”. Take a look at your calendar and see if you have some time on your next days off to fit in some organizing.  Pick a day when you don’t have much going on and choose how long you want to spend working on your organizing project (I set a timer). I recommend choosing a time early in the day, because if you wait to organize later in the day, it most likely won’t happen. You have time to think of excuses or putting other projects (that you really like to do) before the organizing project.
  1. The Big Picture – I usually take a photo of my projects, even my own at home. Grab your camera or cell phone and take pictures of what you need to organize. Download it onto your computer and take a look.  Pictures have a wonderful ability to show us things we might miss while we’re standing in the space at the moment. Be objective with yourself when looking at the photo and jot down some notes on what you see:

  • Does anything jump out at you?
  • What do you like about the picture?
  • What don’t you like?

This little trick can be super helpful when you’re working on a large-scale project.  When you start to lose that motivation to keep going, pull up the photo or take a new photo of the space to remind yourself of how far you’ve come.  And just think about how amazing that AFTER photo is going to look!

  1. Get Your Groove On – Play your favorite playlist or youtube your favorite get-up and move tunes, or maybe you’re like me at times I prefer a playlist with more soothing music to help get the organizing work under away.  Whatever your preference, make sure it is music that will INSPIRE you to keep focused on the project. I find this really helpful when I get to the purging stage that comes after sorting. You know that point where things are looking so much worse than they did before you started?  That’s when you need those tunes cranking!
  1. Find Your Organizing Mentor – Everyone needs one!  Whether it someone in a group you’re with on Facebook , or someone you know in real life, or find someone who is good at organizing and take some time to have a chit-chat with them. For me, I have one – Julie Morgenstern, I bought her book Organizing from the Inside Out in 1998. I fell in love because she let me know I was not ‘weird’ for loving Order & Tidy!  My mom would tell her friends how “I can walk into a room to get something her and when I left something would have been organized… in just a matter of minutes”. Julie’s book and other resources I have collected over the years are like my “Organization Bibles” – I highlight, make notes, and flag pages. These resources along with magazine photos keeps me motivated to complete my projects . . . Whatever works!

Good luck with your projects – don’t give up, keep the end result in sight!

This is the year you are going change your fucking story!

Stop telling people the same damn story about yourself you have been telling for years.

Hello, that was me – I would tell people about my abusive-drunk stepfather and use him as a certain *footnote in my life. I would screw up somewhere along my path of life and tell people – Oh, I did that? You must have missed my little *footnote of how I grew up with a drunk abusive man in the house – you know that same old excuse you use as a crutch. What I didn’t realize, I was giving him the spotlight that he did not earn or deserved . . . instead of Me!

One day, I got sick and tired of listening to that same freakin story I told. It never made me feel good telling the story (never all of the story). One day listening to Madonna on the radio – I decided to change my story, I told myself “Cheryl, your headline from now on is going to be I MADE IT THROUGH THE WILDERNESS” I survived, that is much better story to tell.

Make this your year – Let’s make this our year!

How’s Your Week Going So Far?

You are almost there . . . to the end of your week!

Take today as one-of-those-days, you try to finalize some projects, plans, reports or anything that has a deadline attached to it . . . Reminder next week is going to be a short work week.

If possible,  “don’t leave anything on the desk” – rid your desk of all the unfinished business of the week. Actually, on Friday – clear off your desk, then clean it, and finally  dust it along with all your knick-knacks around the office. You want to be able to enjoy your time with family and friends over the Thanksgiving Holiday, while having a Peace of Mind that you took care of everything . . . no strings untied.

Some music while you’re getting all your projects done – Enjoy!

How a Time Policy Can Help Make Your Day At Work More Effective

 office organizing with clock

Time Policy Chart – (the times are only examples)

7:00am- 9:00am:    (Voicemail, Emails, In-Box Correspondence) *Fill in your own tasks
9:00am – 10:30am:  (Quiet Hour – Priority Tasks) *Fill in your own tasks
10:30am- 12noon:  (Appointments, Meetings, Calls, Correspondence) *Fill in your own tasks
12noon – 12 :30pm:  (Mail, Voice mail, Emails) *Fill in your own tasks
12:30pm-2 :00pm:  (Exercise – Lunch) *Fill in your own tasks
2:00pm – 4 :00pm:  (Appointments – Priority Tasks) *Fill in your own tasks
4 :00pm- 5 :00pm:  (Meetings, Assignments, Calls) *Fill in your own tasks

A Time Policy is a guide to be used in scheduling your tasks, appointments, meetings and other activities. It involves reserving certain Time Periods of the day for specific tasks and projects. The first thing you need to find out is what is your Prime-Time? Me, I’m a “morning person” – I can get most of my task done by 10:30 am. You need to create a policy that will utilize your prime time, and not set yourself up for failure by scheduling appointments, meetings, or making important calls during the times when you’re feeling sluggish. This makes your day more effective in several ways:

    1. The Routine = it will eventually become one . . . I promise – performing the same type of tasks at the same time each day reduces the brain’s “plan-time” – That time it normally takes to get to get your shit together and orient a plan to the task, the plan is already in place by your Time Policy.
    1. Natural Breaks – it allows you to make use of  the natural breaks in a day – use: coffee, lunch, quitting time as deadlines to prevent jobs expanding beyond the allotted time space.
  1. Meetings & Appointments – which tend to take twice as long as they should – A Time Policy  ensures that you use your prime time effectively for priority tasks and assignments.

So, go ahead and set-up your time policy – the first one I made was in 1998 it was written on a piece of 2″x 3″ notepad paper, I promised myself I would write out my time policy every morning (I am a morning person) for 21 days. . . the rest is history. You will have to experiment a few times before you finalize your own Time Policy, of course you can update at anytime according to your lifestyle and work career.
