Mini-Clutter Clinic

Mini Clinic: Organizing the Family Bathroom

Objective:
To transform a cluttered family bathroom into a functional, clean, and efficient space for all members of the family to use comfortably.

Step 1: Declutter

  • Remove everything: Clear off countertops, shelves, and cabinets. Lay everything out on a surface.
  • Sort into categories: Group items by type—towels, toiletries, cleaning supplies, first aid, etc.
  • Toss expired or unused items: Discard expired products, empty bottles, and anything no longer in use.

Step 2: Establish Zones

Create dedicated zones for:

  • Daily use items: Keep frequently used products (toothbrushes, soap, hand towels) within easy reach.
  • Hair and skincare products: Use a drawer or container for makeup, skincare, and hair tools.
  • Bathing essentials: Organize shampoos, conditioners, and body washes near the shower or bath.
  • Cleaning supplies: Store under the sink or in a closet, but keep them out of reach of children.
  • Family members’ items: If several family members use the bathroom, create personal bins or shelves for each person.

Step 3: Maximize Storage

  • Use drawer organizers: Keep small items like cotton swabs, toothpaste, and razors tidy.
  • Install shelves or baskets: Make use of vertical space with wall-mounted shelves or hanging baskets for extra storage.
  • Use clear containers: For deep cabinets or under-the-sink areas, use clear bins or baskets for easier access to items.
  • Towel hooks or racks: Mount hooks for each family member’s towel, or add a towel bar to keep them off the floor.

Step 4: Label & Maintain

  • Label containers and bins: Labeling helps everyone know where things belong and keeps the system working.
  • Implement a routine check: Once a month, check for items that need replenishing or discarding, ensuring the space stays clutter-free.

Additional Tips:

  • Add a laundry hamper: Make it easy for everyone to toss dirty towels and clothes directly into the hamper.
  • Childproofing: If you have young children, ensure that any sharp or hazardous items are stored securely and out of reach.

Products to Consider:

  • Stackable bins for under-sink storage
  • Over-the-door hooks for towels
  • Clear plastic containers for small items
  • Drawer dividers for toiletries
  • A lazy Susan for easy access to products in deep cabinets

Final Thoughts:

A well-organized family bathroom can streamline the morning and evening routines, helping every family member start their day more efficiently. Plus, an organized bathroom is easier to clean and maintain!

Happy Organizing! Cheryl

In the chaotic dance of our daily lives, finding solace amidst the storm is a pursuit we all yearn for. Imagine a world where clutter and chaos give way to a serene symphony of order and purpose. Today, we embark on a journey to explore the profound emotional impact of embracing organization in our lives.

Section 1: The Liberating Bliss of Decluttering

Picture this: the weight of unnecessary possessions lifted from your shoulders, leaving room for clarity and tranquility. As you bid farewell to the clutter, a sense of liberation washes over you, akin to the feeling of a cool breeze on a hot summer day. Decluttering is not just about physical space; it’s a profound emotional cleanse.

As you synchronize your life to this rhythmic dance of order, you find a harmonious blend of productivity and peace. The satisfaction of completing tasks in an orderly fashion is an emotional reward that fuels your motivation.

Section 3: Crafting a Sanctuary of Serenity

Your living space is a canvas, and organization is the brush that paints a masterpiece of peace. When you curate a sanctuary “Nest” that reflects order and intentionality, you create a haven for your soul. The emotional impact is like stepping into a spa after a long, hectic day—pure bliss.

Section 4: The Empowering Rituals of Planning

Organizing your time is not just a practical act; it’s a powerful emotional investment. The ritual of planning brings a sense of control and purpose, turning the chaotic unknown into a roadmap of achievable goals. With each planned step, you become the architect of your destiny, and that empowerment is exhilarating. Even if something goes wrong along the way . . . which it will if you have a plan you can be flexible with your next step.

In Closing:

In the symphony of life, embracing organization is the key to unlocking a crescendo of positive emotions. The decluttered spaces, the rhythmic dance of productivity, the crafted sanctuaries “Nest”, and the empowering rituals—they all converge to create a beautiful melody of joy and serenity. So, let’s embark on this journey together, and let the harmony of organization resonate in our hearts and homes, bringing forth a cascade of positive emotions that will echo through every aspect of our lives.

Streamline Once You Have Lived With Organize

Streamline AFTER you Organize

Not while . . .

I might be going against the grain here, but I don’t talk about streamlining until my clients have lived in their newly organized space for a bit. I tell them to try sitting in a different spot than usual, like a different chair or part of the couch. They’ll get a new perspective on their space and might be surprised at how adaptable humans are in their environments.

Now, the fun part starts! Labeling, totes, storage containers… People think that the fun part of organizing is all the pretty stuff. Trust me, I’ve broken many hearts with clients who thought this way on our very first day. But after going through the process, they understand that patience and consistency are what get you to that calm living.

Streamlining a space that has already been organized involves maintaining order and optimizing the efficiency of the existing organizational system.

Here are some steps to help you streamline a space:

  • Assessment:
    • Begin by evaluating the current state of the space. Identify any areas that may have become cluttered or disorganized since the initial organization.
  • Declutter:
    • Remove any items that do not belong in the space or are no longer needed. Be ruthless in decluttering to maintain a clean and organized environment.
  • Reevaluate Storage Solutions:
    • Assess the effectiveness of the storage solutions in place. Consider whether there is a need for additional storage or if the existing storage can be optimized for better use of space.
  • Labeling:
    • If items are not already labeled, consider adding labels to containers, shelves, or drawers. Clear labeling makes it easier to locate items and encourages everyone to return items to their designated places.
  • Routine Maintenance:
    • Establish a regular maintenance routine. Dedicate a few minutes each day or week to tidying up the space, putting things back in their designated spots, and addressing any emerging organizational issues.
  • Optimize Layout:
    • Consider the flow and arrangement of items in the space. Optimize the layout to make it more intuitive and efficient. Frequently used items should be easily accessible, while those used less frequently can be stored in less accessible areas.
  • Digital Organization:
    • If the space involves digital files or equipment, organize digital assets and folders. Delete unnecessary files and create a logical folder structure. Ensure that electronic devices and cables are organized and tidy.
  • Create Zones:
    • Group similar items together to create functional zones. This makes it easier to find things and promotes a more organized look. For example, create a work zone, a storage zone, and a relaxation zone in a multipurpose room.
  • Implement Systems:
    • Establish systems for handling incoming items. Whether it’s mail, supplies, or other items, having a clear process for dealing with new items prevents them from piling up and disrupting the organization.
  • Evaluate and Adjust:
    • Regularly assess the effectiveness of the organizational system. If certain areas still tend to become disorganized, consider adjusting the system to better suit the needs of the space and its users.
  • Involve Others:
    • If the space is shared, involve others in the organization process. Establish guidelines for maintaining the order, and encourage everyone to contribute to the streamlined environment.

Remember that organization is an ongoing process, and regularly revisiting and maintaining your systems will help keep the space streamlined over the long term.

Posted in Declutter, Downsize, Journal Writing

Join The Journal Movement . . .

Journaling can be a powerful tool for decluttering your home.

Here’s how it can help:

  • Setting Clear Goals: Before you start decluttering, it’s essential to set clear goals. Journaling allows you to articulate what you want to achieve. Write down specific objectives like “Clear out the bedroom closet” or “Organize the kitchen cabinets.” This clarity will give you a roadmap to follow.
  • Creating a Plan: Once you’ve set your goals, create a plan of action. Write down the steps you need to take to achieve each goal. For instance, if you’re decluttering the bedroom, your plan might include tasks like “Sort through clothes,” “Donate or discard unused items,” and “Organize remaining items.”
  • Tracking Progress: Use your journal to track your progress. List the tasks you complete and mark them off as you go. This visual representation of your progress can be incredibly motivating.
  • Reflecting on Sentimental Items: Often, decluttering involves making intentional decisions about sentimental items. Journaling can provide a space for you to reflect on the emotional attachment to these items. Ask yourself why they are important and if they still serve a purpose in your life.
  • Recording Insights and Lessons: As you go through the decluttering process, you’re likely to gain insights about your belongings and your attachment to them. These insights can be valuable in preventing future clutter. Write down any lessons you learn, such as “I tend to accumulate too many clothes” or “I should be more mindful of what I bring into my home.”
  • Identifying Problem Areas: Use your journal to identify specific areas in your home that tend to accumulate clutter. It could be a certain drawer, closet, or room. By recognizing these problem areas, you can focus your efforts on them.
  • Noting Strategies That Work: As you declutter, you’ll likely discover strategies that are particularly effective for you. Maybe you find that categorizing items before organizing them works well, or perhaps setting a timer helps you stay focused. Write down these strategies so you can use them in future decluttering efforts.
  • Addressing Emotional Attachments: Clutter often has emotional attachments. Journaling provides a safe space to explore these emotions. Write about why certain items are hard to let go of and consider whether those emotions are valid or if they’re holding you back.
  • Celebrating Achievements: Celebrate your successes in your journal. Record how you feel after each decluttering session. Acknowledging your accomplishments can boost your motivation to continue.
  • Planning for Maintenance: Decluttering is an ongoing process. Use your journal to plan how you’ll maintain a clutter-free environment. Set regular intervals for reviewing and tidying up your spaces.

Hey, fellow Journalers, remember that journaling is a personal thing, so feel free to do it however you want. Whether you prefer to write with a pen and paper or use a computer or phone, the important thing is that you use journaling as a tool to help you declutter.

When journaling, it’s important to be real with yourself and write about whatever’s on your mind. You might want to write about your thoughts, feelings, experiences, or goals. You can also use journaling to brainstorm ideas, plan for the future, or just relax and de-stress.

Keeping a HOME JOURNAL: I’ve been journaling since I was twelve. My family was military, so we moved every two years. I would journal about the base apartments, townhouses, or homes we lived in so I could remember what we called “home.” As I got older and lived in my own apartments, condos, or mobile homes, I would journal about those spaces too.

I used to live in a tiny little mobile home where the sunlight would stream through my bedroom window every morning. It was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. It was like Mother Nature was saying, “Good morning!” every day. I’ve never seen anything like it since.

Once you get started, you may find that journaling becomes a regular part of your routine. It can be a great way to connect with yourself and improve your mental health.

Should I Sell or Stay?

Why Should I Sell My House Now? The current real estate market is favorable for sellers. Home prices are high, and inventory is low, which means that you could get the perfect price for your home. An organized home can significantly impact its marketability and potential to sell quickly.

Inventory is Low The National Association of Realtors predicts a low housing inventory throughout 2023. This is a sign you should sell your home because it means homes are in high demand. You’ll have more power to negotiate a better contract.

Possible Decline in Home Prices in the Future The latest read on home prices shows they hit an all-time high, rising 2.3% from the same month last year. That’s a more significant annual gain than the roughly 1% recorded; this comparison will likely be even more critical because prices began falling last August.

Home Sale has Increased One great bonus of a strong seller’s market is that your home value may have increased with demand. Suppose your home appraised for a higher value than previously. In that case, consider cashing in on your home’s equity by selling. If your home value has increased and you have built equity, you can make the profits by selling or renting your home.(Key Takeaways from article www.realtor.com)

With tight inventory levels and still-high prices, the Connecticut housing market shares many similarities with the national market. Here’s a closer look at Connecticut’s current real estate trends and where the market might go for the rest of 2023.

Here are several ways in which an organized home can help sell faster:

Creates a Positive First Impression: When potential buyers walk into a well-organized, clutter-free home, they are more likely to imagine themselves living there. This positive first impression can set the tone for the rest of the viewing.

  • Highlights the Home’s Best Features: An organized space allows buyers to see the home’s features clearly. They can appreciate the layout, size, and potential without distractions from clutter.
  • Facilitates Better Photography: A tidy, organized home photographs better. High-quality listing photos are essential for attracting potential buyers online, where many home searches begin.
  • Maximizes Perceived Space: A clutter-free environment can make a space feel larger. Buyers tend to be drawn to homes that feel spacious and open.
  • Easier for Buyers to Visualize: When a home is organized, buyers can more easily envision themselves living there. They can mentally place their own belongings and see how the space would work for their needs.
  • Highlights Storage and Functional Spaces: Well-organized closets, cabinets, and storage areas demonstrate the home’s functionality. Buyers appreciate ample storage options.
  • Reduces Distractions: Clutter can be distracting and may prevent buyers from seeing the true potential of the space. An organized home allows them to focus on the features and layout.
  • Implies Good Maintenance: An organized home often gives the impression that the property has been well-maintained. This can instill confidence in potential buyers that they won’t face hidden issues.
  • Suggests the Home is Move-In Ready: A clean and organized home implies that it’s ready for a new owner to move in without the hassle of extensive cleaning or repairs.
  • Foster Emotional Connection: A well-organized home can create an emotional connection with potential buyers. They may feel more comfortable and “at home” during a viewing.
  • Encourages Higher Offers: When a home is well-organized, it’s easier for buyers to see its value. This can lead to more competitive offers and potentially a quicker sale.
  • Stands Out in the Market: In a competitive real estate market, an organized home can stand out from others that may be cluttered or less well-maintained.

Remember that organizing a home doesn’t necessarily mean removing all personal touches. It means creating a clean, tidy, and inviting environment that allows potential buyers to see the space’s full potential. If needed, consider consulting with a professional stager/organizer like Lifestyle by Design to help prepare the home for sale.

The footpath metaphor is a helpful way to think about organizing. It can help you to focus on what is important and to avoid getting sidetracked. It can also help you to see the big picture and to make sure that your organization is working towards its goals.

As we work through your organizational struggles, we will use the footpath metaphor to help you to create a clear, functional, and purposeful organization.

The redesign will help you create a space that reflects your personality and passions. It will be a sanctuary where you can be energized, not drained. Are You Staying or Selling?

Take Yourself Out of the Home!

Once you put house your home on the market it’s not yours anymore, it’s for the next set of people.

As hard as reality sounds, you need to depersonalize the house to sell it. Try to see it through the buyer’s eyes and think zero clutter, warm wall palettes, soft textures, and small bursts of color —you’re aiming for neutral, but still keep the home charming!

Ways to Depersonalize the Home:

  1. Remove all personal / family pictures and photos.
  2. Get a headstart on packing up the NOT NEEDED NOW items.
  3. Pack up collections and collectibles.
  4. Pack away toys and sporting equipment – Keep the ones in use in stylish storage that fits the room design.
  5. Don’t forget to depersonalize the bathrooms – put your and the family’s toiletries into a carry tote for each family member. This keeps the bathroom looking tidy & clean.
  6. Erase any trace of your personal hobbies. This one I don’t follow thoroughly – if there is an area where you may need imagination about what to do with the room, I have used fitness and musical equipment in areas throughout the home . . . remember we want to keep the charm!

We’re giving the buyer a glimpse of how the home can be lived in, not how the home is lived in!

Peace & Harmony ~ Cheryl

How Can A Professional Organizer Help Teachers?

Organizer & Teacher

A professional organizer can be of great assistance to teachers in several ways.

Here are some ways in which a professional organizer can help teachers:

  1. Classroom Organization: A professional organizer can help teachers create an organized and efficient classroom layout. They can provide guidance on arranging furniture, storage solutions, and creating designated areas for different activities. This ensures that the classroom is optimized for teaching and learning, allowing for smooth transitions and easy access to materials.
  2. Material Management: Teachers often have a wide range of teaching materials, such as textbooks, workbooks, art supplies, and manipulatives. A professional organizer can help teachers sort through these materials, categorize them, and create efficient systems for storage and retrieval. This makes it easier for teachers to locate and access the necessary resources when planning and delivering lessons.
  3. Paperwork & Filing Systems: Teachers deal with a significant amount of paperwork, including lesson plans, assignments, assessments, and administrative documents. A professional organizer can assist in setting up effective filing systems, both physical and digital, to help teachers stay organized and easily locate important documents. This reduces the time and stress associated with managing paperwork.
  4. Time Management & Planning: Teachers have numerous responsibilities, including planning lessons, grading assignments, attending meetings, and collaborating with colleagues. A professional organizer can help teachers develop effective time management strategies and planning systems. This can include creating schedules, prioritizing tasks, and implementing productivity tools. By optimizing their time, teachers can focus more on teaching and spend less time on administrative tasks.
  5. Decluttering & Downsizing: Over time, classrooms can accumulate unnecessary clutter, making it challenging to maintain an organized environment. A professional organizer can help teachers declutter their classrooms, identifying unnecessary or valuable items. They can assist in deciding what to keep, donate, or discard, creating a more streamlined and functional space.
  6. Stress Reduction & Work-Life Balance: By helping teachers establish efficient organizational systems, professional organizers can reduce the stress and overwhelm associated with managing classroom resources and paperwork. This, in turn, can contribute to better work-life balance, allowing teachers to focus on their students and personal well-being.

Overall, a professional organizer can bring expertise in organization and efficiency to teachers, helping them create a well-organized and functional classroom environment. By reducing clutter, implementing effective systems, and improving time management, teachers can enhance their productivity and create a more conducive learning environment for their students. Maybe, for the first time since being a teacher, you actually enjoy summers!

Organize Is Self-Care

Mood and Emotional Well-being

Our surroundings can greatly influence our mood and emotional state. A thoughtfully decorated space that reflects our personal preferences and evokes positive emotions can uplift our spirits, promote relaxation, and reduce stress and anxiety.

Colors, lighting, textures, and natural elements in our decor can have a profound impact on our emotional well-being. You only need to buy a book or Google “Color Psychology” to learn the impact color has on the mind and that it’s quite significant. Look at the colors in the photo above – what do they make you feel? For me, energized and healthy. Imagine living around colors that give you the desired results in your mood. When you live in clutter it’s hard to find the colors that have impacted your life, all you see is overwhelm.

Stress Reduction

A space that reflects you can create a sense of calm and tranquility, providing an escape from the demands and pressures of daily life. When you come home and night and turn the key, you open your door to either a space that feels good or one that doesn’t. You want it to be your haven, your nest. By incorporating elements like comfortable furniture, soothing colors or at least colors that soothe YOU, and natural elements, you can create an environment that promotes relaxation and stress reduction. Do not forget to incorporate cleaning & organizing into your haven!

Productivity and Focus

Focus has become a major issue in recent years. Many people struggle to focus due to neurological reasons or poor choices, such as spending too much time on their phones, saying yes to too many things, or not eating a healthy diet. However, focus and productivity can be improved, even for those with ADHD, by creating an organized and positive environment. Cluttered and disorganized spaces can be distracting and hinder productivity, while a well-designed and organized space can enhance concentration, creativity, and efficiency.

Here are some tips for creating a more focused and productive environment:

  • Declutter your space. Get rid of anything that doesn’t serve you or that you don’t need.
  • Organize your space. Create a system for storing things so that you can easily find what you need.
  • Create a workspace that is free from distractions. This means turning off your phone, closing any unnecessary tabs on your computer, and finding a quiet place to work.
  • Take breaks. Get up and move around every 20-30 minutes to avoid getting too bogged down in one task.
  • Reward yourself. When you accomplish a task, give yourself a small reward, such as taking a break, watching a funny video, or eating a healthy snack.

Physical Comfort

Research has shown that physical clutter can create a lot of stimulation for your brain, making it difficult to focus on the task at hand. As a result, cleaning and organizing have been linked to a decrease in feelings of anxiety and an increase in comfort in your surroundings. Seeing clutter around you can be draining. Ergonomic furniture, adequate lighting, and good ventilation are all essential for creating a comfortable and healthy home. What is more important to you: a “social media” sofa or something you can snuggle up on with your kids and watch a movie? Additionally, adding some indoor plants can improve air quality and create a more pleasant and rejuvenating atmosphere. The natural element of bringing the outside in can also be very calming to our nervous system.

Personal Expression and Identity

Our home is an extension of our identity and personal expression. I know it sounds like the opening of a decor book. But it’s true. Decorating our space in a way that aligns with our values, interests, and aesthetic preferences can foster a sense of belonging and enhance our overall well-being because we are allowing ourselves to open up and show who we are. It allows us to create an environment that reflects who we are and supports our emotional and psychological needs even if that’s a rainbow unicorn Squishmallow on our bed (it can go in the closet when guests visit – haha), or a stack of Business & Design books by the bed with our favorite candle, the home isn’t a museum – it’s a nest, a nurturing, beautiful place of refuge and love.

Social Connections and Relationships

What happens when you love your home? You automatically want to share it with others! A home that you like can also facilitate social connections and positive relationships. A welcoming and inviting atmosphere can encourage social interactions, bonding, and a sense of community. Your gatherings can leave memories that get almost stamped into your home for years to come. I always remember every birthday party for my son, the day I brought him home from the hospital and gave him a little home tour through each room, and the great meals I’ve served. When our spaces are comfortable and visually appealing, we are more likely to invite others in and foster meaningful connections.

Mindfulness and Self-Care

Organize & Design for well-being involves a mindful and intentional approach to creating a space that supports self-care. It encourages us to prioritize our own well-being and design our environment in a way that promotes relaxation, mindfulness, and self-reflection. By incorporating elements like cozy corners, meditation areas, or inspiring artwork, we create reminders to take care of ourselves and nurture our mental and emotional health. I have a Prayer corner in my Micro-Workout space, so I actually do it more now because it reminds me of what matters each day since it’s the first corner I see when I wake up and the last one that I see before bed.

Organizing for well-being is important because it can positively impact our mood, reduce stress, enhance productivity, improve physical comfort, support personal expression, foster social connections, and encourage self-care. I mean, what’s not to love about focusing on well-being when you take on your next home project? By intentionally creating a space that nurtures our well-being, we can experience a more balanced, harmonious, and fulfilling life, and don’t we all deserve that?
