Organizing your spaces is not just a luxury; it’s essential to creating a balanced and productive lifestyle. Clutter and disorganization can have a profound impact on your mental and emotional well-being. When your living or working environment is chaotic, it can lead to feelings of stress, overwhelm, and even a sense of being stuck. Conversely, an organized space promotes clarity, focus, and peace of mind, allowing you to operate more efficiently and feel more in control.
A well-organized space saves time and energy. When you know where things are, you donโt waste precious moments searching for misplaced items, which reduces frustration and increases productivity. It helps you maintain a sense of calm, especially in stressful situations, because your environment is set up to support your daily routines, not hinder them. This is particularly important for people juggling multiple responsibilities like work, family, and personal care.
Additionally, organizing isn’t about making everything perfect; it’s about creating systems that work for you and your unique lifestyle. Whether itโs a kitchen where meal prep becomes effortless, a workspace that boosts creativity and concentration, or a living room that invites relaxation and connection, organizing is about making life flow better. It’s a form of self-care that enhances the quality of your life by creating physical and mental space for the things that matter most.
Far from being a luxury, organization is a necessity. It empowers you to live more intentionally, reduces anxiety, and fosters a healthier, more functional lifestyle. When your space is in order, your mind can follow suit.

So, letโs get started! Commit just 10 minutes to your first clinic, and watch how these small, intentional actions can lead to big transformations. Remember, every step forward is a step toward a more serene, organized life. Youโve got this!
Purse/Briefcase/Backpack
Dump the contents from your daily bag. Only add the items you use back in. Let go of the rest. If you choose a day each week this 10-minute task will be a way to change a habit and behavior.
Bathroom
Let go of old cosmetics (see this for expiry guidelines), expired prescriptions, and OTC meds (hereโs how to dispose of them). Take an assessment through each drawer and cabinet. Donate to a local homeless shelter if there are unopened items (toothpaste, shampoo, soap) or similar items that you know you will never use.
Hall Closet or Storage Area
Iโve never seen the inside of your hall closet, but I can guarantee there are things in there you donโt need, donโt want, and donโt even remember you have or donโt know how they got there.
Pantry
If there are other things you never use, let them go and make space. Donate unexpired, unopened items to your local food bank. Create a master list of what goes where on what shelf, create something to match the theme of your kitchen, drop it in a Dollar Store frame, and hang it so everyone knows how to keep the pantry tidy.
Nightstand
Make the space near where you sleep peaceful and straightforward. Having a battery-operated clock next to the bed is nice in case of power outages. Have water, and a notebook with a pen/pencil to make those last-minute thoughts before dreamland.
Outdoor space
Tackle balconies, porches, front yards, and backyards. Even outside clutter is clutter. If your home is on the market or will be short, curb appeal makes that first impression.
Car
From the glove box to the trunk, do a deep dig of your car. Youโll probably eliminate that annoying rattling noise or solve the mystery smell in the process too.
Inbox
If your inbox has become a 2-year to-do list, start deleting it for 10 minutes at a time. Consider email bankruptcy if itโs a lost cause (select.all.delete.). If you donโt remember what emails you were saving and why . . . let them go!
Thoughts
Whatโs swirling around up there? Write down 10 things on your mind, weighing you down, and preventing you from thinking clearly. Moving your worries from the brain to the paper will help you figure out the next step.
Office
Are there things on your desk, in drawers, or hiding in a filing cabinet that you can easily let go of? Let go of the things in your office that donโt contribute to your purposeful, effective work style.
Now that youโve let procrastination know that motivation and transformation have taken over, consider other decluttering challenges and resources to continue the momentum of moving forward to a simpler lifestyle.
Journaling can be a great way to improve your mental health. It can help you to:
Unclutter your mind and reduce stress
Process difficult emotions
Track your progress and goals
Reflect on your life and make positive changes
When journaling, it is important, to be honest with yourself and to write about whatever is on your mind. You may want to write about your thoughts, feelings, experiences, or goals. You can also use journaling to brainstorm ideas, plan for the future, or simply relax and de-stress.
There are many different ways to journal. You can write in a traditional journal, or you can use a blog, an online journal, or even a voice memo app. There is no right or wrong way to journal, so find what works best for you.
If you are new to journaling, it can be helpful to start with a few prompts. Here are a few ideas:
What are you grateful for today?
What is one thing you are proud of yourself for?
What is one thing you are looking forward to?
What is one thing you are worried about?
What is one thing you want to change about your life?
Once you get started, you may find that journaling becomes a regular part of your routine. It can be a great way to connect with yourself and improve your mental health.
Here are some additional tips for journaling:
Find a quiet place where you can write without distractions.
Set aside some time each day to journal, even if it is just for a few minutes.
Don’t worry about grammar or spelling. Just write whatever comes to mind.
If you get stuck, try writing about something that is bothering you or something that you are grateful for.
Reread your journal entries from time to time to see how you have grown and changed.
Journaling can be a great way to process your thoughts and feelings, so don’t be afraid, to be honest with yourself.
If you find that journaling is not helpful for you, there are other things you can do to improve your mental health. Talk to a coach, counselor, or therapist, join a support group, or try other relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation.
